Chapter 10

Half an hour later, Janet let herself into her room. Aggie was fast asleep on one of the pillows on the bed.

“My tummy is full of chocolate,” she told the animal. “Edward couldn’t decide what sort of chocolate he wanted, so we shared several different options.”

Aggie didn’t reply. In the bathroom, Janet stared at herself in the mirror. Besides her overfull stomach, her lips still tingled from the goodnight kiss that Edward had given her in the corridor outside of her suite.

“No more assignments unless our cover can be as a married couple,” he’d told her in a whisper.

“It’s only for a few nights,” she’d replied, mostly to remind herself, as she’d already become quite accustomed to sharing her bed with the man she loved.

“We could cause a scandal by sleeping together,” he’d suggested after another kiss.

“I doubt anyone would care in the slightest, but Janet Markham doesn’t sleep with random men.”

He’d laughed and kissed her one last time before she’d opened her door.

Now she washed her face and combed her hair. As she climbed into bed, Aggie opened one eye.

“I was really hoping we’d find Layce today,” she told her pet. “Simon is worried about her, but no one else seems all that concerned. If she truly was kidnapped, she must be terrified.”

“Mewwwww,” Aggie said softly. She snuggled closer to Janet, who switched off the light and shut her eyes.

“I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep,” Janet murmured.

Seemingly only a moment later, Janet’s phone began to buzz insistently.

“I wasn’t certain that you’d think to set an alarm,” Edward said when she answered. “We’re expected in Simon’s office in half an hour.”

Janet frowned and looked at the clock. It was a good thing that Edward had rung, as she hadn’t thought to set an alarm, and now she was going to have to hurry if she wasn’t going to be late.

“See you soon,” she said quickly before tapping the button to end the call.

The shower had something approaching a dozen different knobs, buttons, and nozzles. Janet tapped on everything at least twice, but couldn’t get anything to happen.

“What am I doing wrong?” she asked Aggie.

Aggie walked over to her food bowl and shouted loudly.

“I know you haven’t had breakfast yet, but neither have I.” She looked at the shower again and then sighed. “Maybe it just takes time to get started.”

It took her not much more than a minute to get Aggie her breakfast. Once the animal was happily munching her way through her bowl of food, Janet made another attempt at the shower. She pushed the largest of the buttons, one she’d pressed several times before. This time, water started spraying out from every nozzle.

Shocked, Janet jumped back. Water was going in every direction, multicoloured lights were flashing, and loud music had begun playing. It was not at all what Janet wanted from a morning shower, but she was afraid to touch the controls again and end up without any water at all.

After a quick shower, she pushed the same button again and everything stopped.
